Prairie skirt is an American version of the skirt. Prairie skirts were quite similar to the traditional dirndls, except that prairie skirt has flounces at their end. Prairie skirt has been introduced in the late nineteenth century at about 1978 by the designer Ralph Lauren. Since then prairie skirt is one of the favorites of the teenagers. Prairie skirts got their name from their resemblance to the home made skirts worn by the women of nineteenth century. Since the introduction of prairie skirts it is believed that the prairie skirts were the simplified version of the flared, ruffled skirts of the 1820s. But still prairie skirt has its own identity among high class fashion lovers.
In order to keep the designers of the prairie skirt traditional, designers prefer to make it with the local country fabrics like denim and calico. The long length prairie skirt became mainstream fashion in the late 1970s and early 1980s. At the time of introduction of prairie skirt it was considered as a variant to the traditional dirndl, but the flounces at the bottom of the prairie skirt differentiates it from the traditional dirndl. Prairie skirts made up of light fabrics like chiffon and others were a stylish fashion trend even in the year 2005. Prairie skirts are considered as a fastener of women’’s modern wear. The main purpose of wearing prairie skirts was of square dancing. Following the introduction pf prairie skirt by Ralph Lauren it has been in the mainstream fashion for a long period, and has impressed the skirt lovers a lot.
